Our Sprouting Ruins
Synopsis
In a working-class neighborhood of Quebec City, an old municipal garage becomes the stage for a clash between two visions of the world. On one side, the city dreams of turning it into a hub for high technology; on the other, residents imagine a vibrant, community-rooted space where mutual aid, autonomy, and solidarity can take hold. As bulldozers loom on the horizon, a citizen-led movement begins to organize, reclaim what belongs to them, and rebuild the fabric of their community.
What if the future wasn’t decided from above, but right here, on the street corner?

Biography
It is through encounters with others and the exploration of the world that David taught himself the fundamentals of sound, image, and editing. In 2020, he completed a documentary filmmaking program at INIS, where he directed his first short film Sacrifiée, which received numerous awards at film festivals. While continuing his studies in anthropology, he now devotes his work to documenting popular movements of resistance in a constantly changing world, giving a voice to those who rise up against injustice.

Director's statement
This film is the result of more than four years of filming to follow this social mobilization. The struggle first emerged out of resistance to a technological innovation project in the Maizerets neighborhood. What inspired me about this grassroots movement in particular was that it did not focus solely on opposing a development project that would permanently alter the character of the area, but also sought to create new, inspiring imaginaries for the future : a new vision for urban land use and planning.
In a world where rising cynicism paralyzes any possibility of action to improve people’s living conditions, I believe it is essential to exercise our imagination and envision what the future could be for a territory that has been dominated by polluting industries for more than a hundred years. In this film, the Maizerets municipal garage thus becomes the symbol of a societal project that transcends the limits of its walls. I hope this story will inspire other communities who also wish to weave the social fabric within their own corners of the urban canvas.
